Mesothelioma Information: A Rising Rare Form Of Cancer Leading To Death:
What is mesothelioma?
Mesothelioma is a cancerous tumor /carinoma which affects the thin layer of cells known as the mesothelium. It occurs in
* Pleura - near the inner chest wall.
* Peritoneum - near the abdominal cavity.
* Pericardium - a sac of heart chamber.
* Tunica Vaginalis - Near the testicles (in men only).
If you are unaware of this disease, read ahead, to gain useful mesothelioma information.
Types of mesothelioma:
(1) Epithelioid
(2) Sarcomatoid
(3) Biphasic (Mixed)
Epithelioid is mostly found in a higher ration than all cases by over 50% more rate of distribution.
Causes:
Even one-three months of exposure is enough for the carcinoma to develop. Mesothelioma can affect people like electricians, boilermakers, plumbers, carpenters, machinists etc. Sometimes infected water supplies also contain asbestos as micro-particulate impurities. Genetic predisposition is also a reason for passing of this cancer from one generation. Living in any asbestos environment also raises risk of obtaining a carcinoma .Even unhealthy water consumption ...
... with particulate asbestos can cause cancer cells to aggravate high levels. Phagocytosed fibers entangle in chromoses & can pass on to generations. It mutates & by oncogenesis spreads in the body mechanisms. It activates oncogenes, telomerase & suppresses anti-tumor characteristics of cells.
Symptoms:
* Any fluid around the lung, i.e., Pleural effusion.
* Blood in the sputum.
* As the cancer cells replicate vastly they create a pneumothorax, which collapses the lung.
* Bowel system is affected by pains or blood as well.
* Pulmonary emboli / lumps near heart chambers & walls.
* Great change in the body sugar levels, like glucose.
Diagnosis:
Usually a CAT/CT scan is performed; in some cases MRT is also performed.
Biopsy is done by collection of a small tissue from the tumor area which is performed with tests by a small incision. Laparoscopy is done near the abdomen area.
Cures:
Surgery - Pleurectomy/Decortication is mostly done in the surgical process.
Radiation - For the chest cavity wall, palliative treatment regime is mostly used extensively.
Chemotherapy - Cisplatin, raltitrexed, gemcitabine, carbolated are the main chemicals used. Intramuscular vitamin B12 1000mcg & Lolate 500mcg is administered orally daily. Pemetrexed and Cisplatin are also given in combination. Vinorelbine & carboplatin is usually used in chemotherapy.
Photodynamic Therapy - A photo-sensitive agent collects the radiation when it falls on it thereby reacting to form oxygen compounds to kill the cancer cells. Accumulation of fluids is also eliminated by this process.
