Carpet and upholstery cleaning techniques vary from a dry cleaning technique to one that uses an antimicrobial agent to protect the fabric. In dry cleaning, an absorbent and dry material is worked into the fabric. The material has solvents impregnated in it that act on the dirt and grease in the fabric. The powdery absorbent material holds the particles of dirt in suspension, which can then be brushed off or vacuumed off to leave the fabric clean and fresh.

Dry cleaning works reasonably well for upholstery cleaning, but when it comes to deep pile carpets, it doesn't work nearly as well. A very dirty carpet will need something stronger than dry cleaning material if it is to be cleaned properly. And while the much thinner fabric of typical household upholstery will clean well with a dry cleaning agent, it will benefit more from something stronger, better and more efficient too.

An antimicrobial agent has many benefits. Overall, it works extremely well, much better than dry cleaning techniques, but it goes further than that. An antimicrobial agent will ...
... actually prevent microbes, fungi, bacteria and germs, from attaching themselves to the fabric again. It does this by forming an array of tiny spike-like protrusions pointing upwards from the flat of the fabric. When bacteria and other microbes try to attach themselves to the fabric, they rupture and die.

The water-stabilised antimicrobial agent is also waterproof; thereby preventing damp from forming moulds. It also renders a fabric stain resistant through a barrier that is created that protects the fabric from all outside forces. The antimicrobial agent will not leach away either. It is non-poisoning and non-toxic, it dries quickly after application, is colourless and odourless, it is safe, containing no heavy metals such as lead or mercury. The best of the antimicrobial agents are environmentally friendly too.

One manufacturer of a modern antimicrobial agent that stands out from all the rest for carpet and upholstery cleaning is Max Germ Guard™ Fibre Shield™ from Vitec Global. Unlike other organosilanes, Fibre Shield avoids the hazards of methanol. Repeated washing and cleaning does not destroy the protective effect. Fibre Shield has a different chemical makeup from other more conventional antimicrobial agents, it does not volatise and it offers protection from ultra violet rays. Max Germ Guard™ Fibre Shield™ is really in a class of its own when it comes to carpet and upholstery cleaning.
