Each type tackles the problem in its own way, and is usually either liquid-based or powder-based, with foam cleaners somewhere in between. They can be formulated for general cleaning, stain removal, moisture absorption, odour removal or disinfection.

Foam is used in many of the more popular carpet cleaning products. It can be used as a frothed and aerated solution that is brushed and scrubbed into the carpet, attracting dirt, then vacuumed out of the carpet into a holding tank. The foam is produced from an emulsion mixture of detergents and solvents. The idea is that the foam dries out leaving a substance that has attracted the dirt within the carpet. This can then be vacuumed out of the carpet, leaving it clean once more.

There are a number of carpet cleaning products that employ a dry cleaning method. This is generally an absorbent powder-based product, impregnated with solvents and detergents, that can be scrubbed into the carpet fibres using a machine with rotary brushes. Particles of dirt are suspended and held in the dry powder material within the carpet, and they can then be vacuumed out to leave the carpet clean.

Carpet cleaning products that use either of these two methods are known as light surface cleaning techniques. They cannot perform a deep cleaning action that gets deep down within the carpet pile to fully remove all the underlying dirt that builds up over time. These types of products can be very useful if used regularly before deep levels of dirt are allowed to form. However, if real deep cleaning is required in a carpet, warm or hot water extraction carpet cleaning products are required.

These types of carpet cleaning products are sometimes referred to as steam cleaning products, though in fact actual steam is rarely used. Instead, a fine water spray holding a water-based cleaning solution is injected into the carpet fibres. This penetrates deeply, forcing the dirt to the surface. A second action from the cleaning machine wet vacuums the cleaning solution with the dirt out of the carpet and into a holding tank for later disposal. Carpet cleaning products of this type are the most efficient.
