Mom-trepreneur Spotlight: Delta Labs’ Co-founder Debbie Morgan
An interview with Debbie Morgan, Mother and Entrepreneur- who describes herself as a health “nut” and rightly realizes the need for better alternative health formulas for every man or woman, at any stage in their life.. Debbie has worked for the past year on researching the best herbal ingredients for prenatal health, postnatal weight loss, menopause support and healthy aging, and has developed some of the most innovative & highest quality nutritional supplements on the market today.
West Babylon, New York, May 30, 2011: On a sunny Monday morning in April, Debbie Morgan makes sure her kids get on the school bus, and then heads to her other job, as C.E.O. of Delta Labs, a natural health and wellness company based on Long Island, NY. One of a rising number of “Momtrepreneurs,” Ms. Morgan started the company from scratch just a year ago, and is quickly finding her niche within the industry.
“In year one, we learned a lot of lessons as to how to find the best ingredients, ...
... how to bring together the manufacturing process in the most efficient way, and how to offer our customers the best quality.” she says. The average price of one of her supplements is slightly higher than most other similar products due to the fact that she doesn’t skimp on ingredients or use fillers, which has become an unfortunate trend for many other supplement companies.
Debbie touts her dedication to keeping business within the country, as she only sources her ingredients from U.S. based refineries and manufacturers. “This definitely raises our costs, but in my mind, it’s worth it, because I know I’m offering people a really good product and keeping jobs in the United States.”
And what is the biggest lesson she’s learned?
“I heard a quote the other day that makes a lot of sense. ‘If you pay peanuts, you get monkeys.’ We don’t pay ridiculous salaries here, but I pay extra in order to find the right employees, and make sure that each of them is really dedicated to the vision. They have to really buy in to, and practice, the idea of natural and healthy living.”
Starting the company
Debbie decided on starting a health & wellness company about 13 years ago, after the birth of her last son. However, she wanted to wait until all of her children were “old enough to not need me 24/7,” before starting her business.
The idea first struck her after browsing the selection of prenatal vitamins at a local vitamin store, when she realized there were many missing ingredients, and she couldn’t find that “perfect formula with everything I knew I needed.” As a self-described “health nut”, she realized the growing urgency for better prenatal support supplements and vitamins.
So, after months of research, she laid the groundwork for what would become her first product, Delta Labs’ Prenatal Vitamin. She decided that it would be a product free of fillers; only the best vitamins and herbal extracts would be used. Once she started doing research for the prenatal vitamins, she realized there was a whole range of supplements and vitamins that could be improved upon, and so she set about making her own variations on the products.
“At that point, I think I really got on the nerves of the guy who owned our local vitamin store! I was stopping in or calling there once or twice every day to ask about formulations, or what certain herbs were for.”
Formulas for Women, Designed by Women
As a woman and a mom, Debbie had experienced life before pregnancy, during pregnancy, and after pregnancy, and knew those were all stages of life where women needed extra help with vitamins. Debbie has created herbal products that fill a range from pregnancy until menopause. Her goal is to help people from all walks of life take advantage of the goodness of natural herbs and vitamins, hopefully keeping them away from artificial medications for as long as they live.
You’ll know that she has really put her heart in to the production of each product, as she’s inscribed “Made with Love, Debbie” on each bottle. “I got the idea when I was making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for my youngest son, and he asked me why my sandwiches always taste better than the ones at school. I told him it was because mine are made with love!”
