When it is time to spring clean, it can be quite a chore. But everyone always says split it into bite-size chunks and it instantly becomes more manageable. So why not do one room at a time, each day, until they’re all done? Let’s start with the bathroom. There are certainly enough domestic cleaning tasks here to keep us busy for a few hours.

Tackle the longest jobs first. If you have mildew on the tiles, or limescale on any of the surfaces, treat these and leave the treatment to work while you get on with all the other jobs. Give the toilet bowl a quick scrub and apply toilet cleaner under the rim and around the bowl. Leave this to work too.

If you have shower curtains, remove these from the rails and either wash in the machine or, if not machine washable, soak them with detergent in the bath and scrub with a soft brush or cloth to remove dirt. If they have mildew, wipe with bleach too, but be sure to rinse carefully afterwards. Wipe dry and rehang.

Take all the towels out of the bathroom and wash any that need washing. Those on the bottom of the pile, even if they haven’t been used, may have been ...
... damp for months and need washing to refresh them.

Take all the shower gels, shampoos, soap, conditioner and any bathroom equipment off the shelves, and everything out of the cabinets. Remove and empty any bins, wash and leave outside to dry.

Once the treatment on tiles, grout, or any other surface you’ve treated is done working, scrub off with a brush. If it needs reapplying, do so, and keep testing until you’ve dealt with all the problems.

Now we get to the proper domestic cleaning! Wash the walls and tiles with soapy water, wipe or rinse with clean water. Wipe over the ceiling and light fitting with a just damp cloth at the same time, and wipe around the light switches or cords, too. Wipe around toilet, basins and pedestals with disinfectant, including the overflow and outside surfaces. Do the same inside the cabinets and on any shelves. Polish chrome taps and fittings, and get those soaking in limescale remover out, rinse and wipe dry before polishing if necessary. Scrub inside the toilet bowl again, making sure it is as clean as possible, flush.

Finally, wipe over or wash all the bottles, clean soap dishes and any other equipment before putting it back into place. Use this time to consider whether you actually use all the lotions and potions you keep out and, if not, put them away or throw them away. Reducing the clutter will make the bathroom much easier to keep clean in future. When towels are clean and dry, put back as many as you actually need to have out (usually 2 or 3 per person is enough, depending on how many fit in your washing machine, so that you don’t run out of clean towels unnecessarily).

And you’re done! See my other articles on how to spring clean the rest of the house.
