Anytime that a manufacturing company requires a special part to make their products they have to enlist the aid of a machine shop. Shops like these are places where different and carefully built machines are utilized to turn raw materials into very specific parts by cutting, drilling, and grinding away at them. Without these shops constantly working to make these specialized parts and pieces many manufacturers would not have what they need to make their own products.

First and foremost, a machine shop would be absolutely nothing were it not for the highly advanced machines that are utilized to fulfill its daily tasks. Any person who's seen one of these machines at work would likely be quite astonished at how perfectly and accurately they can craft a piece of raw material into a specific part. Many machines do different things like drill holes through materials. Some, such as lathes, are used for turning which is the method of spinning the material and pressing a blade to it to cut away at its surface. There are other machines used for milling which is where the cutter rotates against an immobile object.

A ...
... machinist is an employee who undergoes special training to understand and operate these machines. The machinists are liable for manually placing and manipulating the materials as required for each specific task as well as operating the machine and its various functions. These men and women are provided the skills and knowledge that is necessary to do their jobs as safely as possible so that the risk of injury is greatly reduced.

There are now machines made for these shops that actually don't require the machinists to get very physical at all. These types of machines are known as CNC machines or Computer Numerical Controlled machines, and they are actually operated by computers and computerized controllers. All the human employee now does when working with such a machine is to type in the various commands via a computer and watch to make sure nothing goes wrong. Not only are these types of machines a whole lot safer to operate, they are a great deal more efficient as well.

Nearly every manufactured product we've gotten our hands on is made up of parts and pieces that have come from a machine shop. Just think of a world where there were no tractors to till fields for crops or generators to make energy; both of which are the partial results of these machines. These shops have helped manufacturers to bring us some amazing goods and will enable them to bring us even more in the future.
