American Bulldogs - Facts Every Future Owner Must Know
American bulldogs are basically descendents of the English bulldogs and they had been
near extinction after the Second World War. John Summerville was the man who was
responsible to bring them back through careful breeding and today they are much loved
here in America. The breed is a working breed and is known as good hunters. They are
quite loyal and therefore a good family pet. Also, these dogs are widely known to be brave
and very courageous when it comes to protecting the owners.
Types of Bulldogs
There are mainly two different variations of the American bulldogs- classic and standard.
Standard variety are the dogs that are referred to as the Scott. The Classic breed is known
as Johnson or Bully. Though there are many different hybrids along with innumerable
combinations of both varieties, the basic characteristics are still the same. The standard
breed is short and stocky and looks closely similar to the pit bulls. These dogs are
generally white along with a few brindle or red patches. They have a short and wiry coat
that can be bristly or rough ...
... when touched. They need regular bath and brushing with stiff
bristle brushes. They also look quite boxy because of the strong jaw.
Weight and Size
For those who are thinking about bringing home American bulldogs it would be important
to consider their size and their weight. Males on an average reach heights of 27 inches and
may weigh around 125 pounds. The females are 25 inches in height and about 100 pounds
in weight. They tend to live on an average 16 years. The English variety had been bred
for making them help herd the cattle. A few of their characteristics have been passed on
to the American variety. Though they are known to have a strong personality, are fierce
as protectors and guard dogs they are also very gentle and they get along well with other
pets and children in families.
However, many times they may not be aware of their own strength and weight and
therefore owners must supervise these dogs when there are children and infants around.
These dogs can be a little tough to train because they are often stubborn. However, with
regular and consistent training they will definitely obey well. They are also appropriate for
apartments as they are not quite active indoors. However, they will need to be taken out
regularly and exercised well. American bulldogs can be very lovable and friendly with the
right training.
