When it’s time for spring cleaning, the kitchen is probably the worst room on the list. If you can, get the professionals in to give it a really good going over as part of your annual home cleaning regime; if they only do one room, this is the one to get done! But if you don’t have the budget, or simply prefer to do things yourself, use the checklist below to ensure you give your kitchen the really thorough cleaning it deserves.

Because your kitchen is used for preparing food, you will want to be careful about products you use in it. Ensure all home cleaning products employed in the kitchen are non-toxic. For sanitising, baby sterilising fluid is one of the safest, and easily effective enough for kitchen surfaces.

• Treat any limescale around the sink or faucets with limescale remover. Leave to work for as long as necessary before rinsing and drying.
• Treat the drains by pouring a proprietary cleaner down them and leave for as long as possible before flushing with water (check manufacturer’s instructions on bottle first; some types should be left for only a certain amount of time and no more before ...
... flushing).
• Empty the bin or bins, wash, rinse, and leave outside to dry.
• Remove curtains and have cleaned or dry-cleaned.
• Dust and wipe blinds one slat at a time, or brush roller blinds.
• Remove blind if necessary to clean around window and track or brackets.
• Wash window inside and out with soapy water, rinse and dry.
• When completely dry (I usually leave till the next day) polish the glass inside and out with a glass cleaner, or use vinegar. Either newspaper or a lint-free cloth can be used for this.
• Remove all items from the tops of cupboards and fridge or freezer.
• Wipe down the cupboard tops and other high surfaces, using a non-scratch cream cleaner to remove all grease and grime. Scrub with a brush first if necessary.
• Wipe over all items with soapy water and dry before replacing. The bottoms, which have been in contact with the grease and grime on the cupboard tops, will be the worst. This grease is carried in the air and gets everywhere in the kitchen, so don’t worry about it; everyone’s kitchen is just the same!
• Empty out cupboards one shelf at a time. Clean inside cupboards and shelves with hot, soapy water and wipe over with disinfectant.
• Wipe over all tins, jars, etc. before replacing in cupboard. Work through the cupboards systematically until they are all done.
• Likewise with the fridge. Discard any out-of-date items, take out and clean shelves and salad drawers, and all of the door shelves.
• Clean the outside of the fridge or freezer with PVC cleaner. If it is built-in, clean the edges of the door that you can reach, and leave the outer door to be done along with the rest of the cupboard doors.
• Wipe over all counters and other surfaces with disinfectant (clean first if necessary with non-scratch cream cleaner).
• Sweep and mop the floor, then dry with clean towels.

And that’s the kitchen part of your spring cleaning done! See my other articles for advice on other rooms.
