The New Forest is located in the south coast in south west Hampshire and contains the New Forest National Park – an ancient hunting ground established by William The Conqueror in 1079. This area is unique as its landscape has hardly changed from what it was nearly a thousand years ago, and is thus an ideal destination for day visits, weekends and longer holidays. There are several things to do and see in New Forest for the entire family such as exploring the park via bike or on horse back, going for long walks, exciting water sports, shopping, dining, and visiting museums, zoos and farms. There are several historic towns and villages within the heart of the forest itself and bustling seaside towns which surround New Forest. Here are some of the best towns and villages to visit on your New Forest holiday.

Lyndhurst

This is the most centrally located New Forest village and became the natural ‘capital’ when William The Conqueror established the hunting grounds here. It is home to the ancient Verderer’s Hall and the Queen’s House which is now the local Forestry Commission headquarters. ...
... There is also the museum in the New Forest Visitor Centre and shops, pubs and cafes to keep you occupied in this village.

Brockenhurst

This is situated close to Lyndhurst and is the largest New Forest village by population. It is a peaceful place with pretty green fields and is home to the ever popular New Forest and Hampshire County Show. It also contains the oldest church in the New Forest – the Brockenhurt parish church of St Nicholas. It has a very busy bus and railway station, which is the main interchange in the New Forest.

Beaulieu

Beaulieu is well known for its gorgeous gardens which has the National Motor Museum, Palace House – home to the Montagu family and an ancient Cistercian Abbey. The village is spotted with tiny shops and a pub and is built around the Beaulieu river. Buckler’s Hard is a hamlet in Beaulieu which features a Maritime Museum which showcases how warships for Nelson’s Navy were built.

Burley

This village has a long connection with witches, and even had a self confessed white witch during the late 1950’s. It has plenty of gift shops, art galleries and tea rooms for entertainment. It has direct access to the open lands of the New Forest.

Ringwood

This has been the New Forest’s main market town for hundreds of years. It stands on the western edge at a crossing point of the River Avon, and has a mixture of modern shops. It is the home of the Ringwood Brewery, which produces a variety of ales and wines.
