Educational toys are toys that help your child learn something positive, that helps him or her develop various skills and plays an important role in character formation. Every child has his or her own interests, which should be pursued and fostered. Introducing the right toys at the appropriate age will help foster these interests, provided the toys are also fun and interesting. Although choosing the right educational toys can be overwhelming to any new parent, this process is actually rather simple provided you follow the following basics.

Find a toy that your child has fun with
You will need to find an educational toy that will keep you child engaged and entertained. Toys with bright colours or fancy sounds will be more interesting to a child. A child will learn more from toys they enjoy playing with, because they will be engaged for a longer period of time, and will be more enthusiastic when playing with it.

Find a toy that is appropriate for your child’s age
For babies less than six months, you can buy rattles, colourful pictures, teething rings and soft blocks that will help stimulate reactions ...
... from your baby. For those in between six to nine months, building blocks are suitable. Those that are over one year old will prefer push and pull toys and stuffed toys. Once children have started speaking and drawing, they can then use more advanced toys such as electronic learning aids, puzzles and building kits etc, which help to develop the child’s mind.

Find a toy that matches your child’s interests
Girls will enjoy making cards, creating scrapbooks, fashion design and jewellery making, whereas boys find science and nature and wood craft kits more appealing. Take the time to ask your child or notice what he or she prefers to do – it could be music or sports or art. As children grow older and meet adults, they start imagining future occupations such as being a doctor, a teacher or a chef. Then find items that match with your child’s personal interests, such as a stethoscope, a writing board or a mixing bowl respectively.

Find a toy that is safe and durable
Safety is very important when it comes to toys. Educational toys with small pieces may be dangerous for toddlers or babies. Ensure that the toys are not made of harmful materials and always check the labels for components. Also, buy educational toys that are strong and durable so that your child can play freely without concern. This way, the toy can also be used by other children in the family.
