Writing A Laboratory Report
Lab reports are an essential part of all laboratory courses and a significant part of your grade. It is also how you explain what you did and learnt in an experiment.
The importance of writing a lab report report is to determine how well you performed and understood your experiment during the whole process and how well you can convey that information in an organization fashion.
A lab report should have a title page where you include the title of the experiment, your name, your instructor’s name, and also the date that the experiment was performed and the date that the report was submitted. The title should be very brief and able to describe the main points of the experiment. It’s important to note that your title should begin with a keyword rather than an article.
In order to come up with a good lab report you have to follow a certain format that includes five sections these are; introduction, methods and materials, results, discussion and conclusion. It is important to note that each individual instructor may have a specific format that they may require you to follow, ...
... so you should consult your teacher on the specifics that he may require you to include in your report.
The introduction of a lab report should have one paragraph explaining the objectives and the purpose as to why you are doing the experiment; the hypothesis and also a brief statement on how to test your hypothesis. However, some instructors prefer writing the introduction after you have completed the methods and the materials results and conclusion so as to be sure that you have a good understanding of your experiment.
After introduction you are required to produce a written description of the materials used and all the methods that you used in performing your experiment. However you should also write in details how each and every material was used and how and when it was used during the process of completing your experiment. All the information in this step should be indicated in a way that someone else can perform the same experiment by following your instructions.
In the result section you are supposed to include all the tabulated data from the observation during your experiment. These include tables, charts, graphs and any other other instructions of data that you have collected. It is very important to include a written summary under your table, charts graphs or any other instruction that you have used.
After all the above processes, you will have to summarize what happened in the discussion or conclusion section. You will have to fully discuss and interpret all the information such as; what were your results? What did you learn? Did you encounter any errors during your experiment? Was your hypothesis correct? Finally did your results turn out as you expected? After all these you are supposed to provide suggestion of anything that you think could be improved in your experiment.
Finally it is important to note that if your research was based on someone else’s work, you should indicate the references.
