Writing An Annotated Bibliography
An Annotated bibliography is a list of citations or references to books, articles and documents. The importance of the annotation is to notify the reader of the significance, accuracy, and eminence of the sources cited. Annotation is descriptive because it represents an authors’ point of view, independence and authority they are also descriptive and critical; they expose the authors’ clarity.
When writing an annotation bibliography, it requires thorough library research and also concise analysis. This may enable the reader to locate the book and read more for better understanding. When writing an annotated bibliography, first locate and record citation to books, the periodicals and documents that may contain useful information to your area of study. It is also important to note that, the citation possesses the following elements:
1. Bibliography according to the appropriate citation style (like MLA, APA, CBE/CSE)
2. Explanation of the main points and the purpose of the work which helps to know that you have done a thorough research
3. Confirmation or appraisal ...
... of the authority or qualification of the author.
4. Remarks on the worth, effectiveness and usefulness of the work in terms of the work being researched on
5. The point of view from which the work was written. For instance you may realize whether the author was biased or was trying to reach a certain audience
6. Related links to other work done in the area, like related sources, possibly including comparison with some of those already on the list.
When summarizing the annotation you can use two methods; these are informative and indicative. Informative annotation sometimes read like straight summaries of the source material, but they often spend a little more time summarizing relevant information about the author of the work itself.
The second method is indicative annotation. This method does not attempt to include actual information from the disagreement itself. As a substitute, it gives general information about what kind of questions or issues that are addressed by the work. This sometimes includes the use of chapter title.
