First communion dresses are valuable family heirlooms that are adored the world over. Theses dresses are worn to celebrate the momentous event that marks a child's first communion. Several things add to the worth of the communion dress itself. Although, it doesn't even begin to compare to the beauty and importance of a child's first communion, to a religiously founded Christian family, it is very valuable in its own right.

First communions are a very big deal to young children. It is the time when they partake in the Eucharist for the very first time. This moment is a symbolic tribute to one of the last things that Jesus spoke to his followers. The Bible states that Christ asked that those who follow him drink of his blood and take of his body in order to participate in his holy sacrifice. Though times and circumstances vary from one denomination to the next, nearly all Christian groups participate in this act.

For Westerners communion is an event that happens around the seventh year, but in the Eastern Orthodox tradition it is something that goes on during babyhood. There is generally a large celebration following this momentous event. The clothes that are worn for communion are often cherished pieces that are floated down through the generations.
