A Fresh Perspective On Parenting
I still recall my first trip in an aircraft; I happened to be seventeen. I guess you couldn't say I was very youthful, but in the past my parents favored driving all the time instead. Something that was set in my mind was being educated on the oxygen mask directions. The stewardess stated that it was imperative that we affix our own oxygen mask before lending a hand to anyone around us. For a second, that seemed like an extremely selfish thing to do. Honestly, as a mom, wouldn't you desire to help your kid before helping yourself? Ah, and at that point the light bulb went off. If you're a mom and you didn't help yourself first, there may not be help for the child if mommy doesn't have oxygen.
After that, I always bear in mind the face protector when the issue of "aiding myself or another" pops up. Nowadays, as a parent, the subject has arisen concerning my child's progress and maturity. I have been considering getting him enrolled in a rather pricey - but great! - program that is known for helping him further develop his curiosity, build self-esteem and confidence, and communicate better.
Not long ...
... ago, a friend of mine was telling me about a course on individual improvement she'd taken. Reflecting on my financial plan, I stated that I would sooner register my kid in that training course with the cash, and then I paused. The oxygen mask came into mind.
Is it wise for mothers and fathers to put their kid's growth before their own? Given that parents are the foundation or reinforcement of anything a child learns those first 18 years, as much as I'm tempted to say yes at first impulse, I have to say no. A parent's own personal development should always go first. The effect on the son or daughter may be quite positive, if it commences early on. All things originate from the family, naturally.
So that discussion has led to a series of other questions for our group to discuss. How come particular folks are innately skilled at being a parent, and others aren't? And if not, how can they be advanced? We honestly hadn't thought about the circuit we'd entered into. It turns out that a lot of our kid-rearing proficiency originates from our moms and dads. Even though I don't sanction slapping one's sons or daughters (and I was punished that way, when I was young), I know that certain influences from childhood are still there, like "Honesty is the best policy."
So, is it too late, or are we, and our children, destined to the limiting belief patterns of our parents? It's not that severe, thankfully. Excellent programs are out there, like the one my buddy mentioned, the Executive Success Programs; the lead trainer and company head is Nancy Salzman, who has two kids. If we can get rid of restrictive principles, we can replace them with better ones for our children, and become more skillful at being parents at the same time; remain optimistic!
