House Cleaning Help… Really, Give It A Try!

I think, deep in the back of our minds, most of us would love to relinquish the house cleaning to someone else. Some of the reasons so many of us do not do so are economics, guilt, fear of invasion of our personal space, and the thought that we will inevitably have to clean the house ourselves before we could possibly let anyone else loose in it to see how slovenly we actually are!

But the benefits of having cleaning help would override all these objections if we just thought about the whole thing objectively and did a little planning. After all, why should it be any different employing someone to do our housework than it is to employ someone to do our accounts, or our car servicing? Well, the answer is that it really shouldn’t be!

Having moved in with my partner recently, and never having had cleaning help myself before, I was a little unnerved at the thought of someone doing my dirty work for me… not to say the slightly weird feeling of having someone else going round what was fast becoming my home, having access to my personal possessions, and seeing how dirty the apartment had become in the seven days since ...
... she had last been there.

In fact, I’ve very quickly got used to the idea, have no worries about the possibility of her accidentally finding my underwear at the back of the radiator (after all, if it were there, it would only be because it had fallen off while drying, so it would certainly be clean) and I even find myself taking advantage of knowing that she will be there to do whatever I have not had time to do myself (I have found myself often cooking fries on a Wednesday evening in the comforting knowledge that if the fat spits over the hob, she will be cleaning it anyway the next morning). I generally tidy and clean a little the morning before she arrives, but if I do not have time to do the washing up, she will get on with it without complaint. I enjoy seeing her and we always have a pleasant conversation when she arrives, but I keep out of her way while she cleans (and while I get on with my own work), and the house cleaning gets done efficiently and much better than it would if I did it myself.

Because the apartment we live in is small, we only have our cleaner once a week, for a couple of hours, but she does the things like dusting that we hate, cleans the bathroom and hard floors thoroughly, and will adapt without direction to what needs doing. If the mirrors do not really need cleaning, for example, she concentrates on the other things that spring to her eyes. She will happily iron instead of cleaning if my partner needs his shirts ironing (a job I absolutely cannot abide) and, in the end, she gets paid for doing what we would otherwise have to do in our spare time. This allows her to study for a qualification that will enable her to do better paid work in future. So, really, who loses?
