Every new car needs to undergo some assessment testing before going into the market, in most countries like the USA, Japan, Australia and the whole of Europe conduct the New Car Assessment Programme (NCAP). This is done to ensure the safety of the automobile as well as the passengers and the pedestrians alike.
It id believed that the European version of the NCAP conducts the most thorough crash test and security assessment programmes.
In India, there is the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), which plays an important part in making sure of the safety and the efficiency of the vehicles. It is done through technical excellence in R&D, testing, certification and the framing of car regulations.
The difference between the NCAP and the ARAI is that the former focuses more on the safety standards while the latter emphasizes more on the environmental side of vehicle testing.
The fact that there are no strict rules and regulations for compulsory installation of certain car safety features like the seat belts is one reason why car manufacturers in India do not focus more on the safety features.
