Colitis - Causes And Home Remedies

Colitis is a disorder characterized by inflammation of the inner lining of colon which is the part of large intestine between rectum and cecum. Colitis leads to ulcer formation around the walls of colon and rupturing of the colon walls. Colitis results in severe abdominal cramps and pain, frequent urge for passing stool, watery stool, passing of blood in stool, bloodlessness, weakness, fever, nausea, excessive sleepiness, loss of appetite, dehydration and tremendous weight loss. The passing of watery stool may continue for more than a month, taking a toll on the patient's overall health. The causes for an inflamed colon may be listed as follows:

1. Infection (the main infection causing bacteria are Campylobacter, Shigella, Salmonella and E.Coli).
2. Inadequate supply or total loss of blood supply to the colon.
3. Inflammatory bowel disease.
4. Invasion and erosion of colon wall by collagen or lymphocytic white blood cells.

Home Remedies for Colitis Treatment

1. Take a glass of coconut water mixed with a teaspoon of juice extracted from fresh drumstick leaves and a teaspoon of honey. This is an effective home remedy for colitis.

2. Glasses of pineapple juice or carrot juice are good for treating inflamed colon.

3. Rubbing cayenne extracts over abdomen improves colon function.

4. Take ripe banana twice daily. This treats ulcerative colitis effectively.

5. Take ample papaya with peppermint or garlic. This heals the colon.

6. Make thick rice gruel by adding a cup of butter milk and ripe, mashed banana. Take it twice a day. It serves as an ideal diet for a diseased colon.

7. Drink a glassful of cabbage juice. It treats inflamed colon effectively.

8. Take a teaspoon of fish oil. It reduces colon inflammation.

9. Consumption of pumpkin seeds calms down a colon.

10. Drink a glassful of buttermilk after lunch. This checks colitis.

11. The juice extracted from wheatgrass detoxifies the system and alleviates colon inflammation.

12. Stay away from spicy food, junk food and non-vegetarian diet.

13. Abstain from alcohol, caffeine intake and smoking.

14. Avoid citrus fruits, for they worsen conditions by causing acidity.

15. Take calcium supplements, for calcium prevents spasm in colon.

16. Perform yogic exercises, they promote intestine health and increase overall immunity of the body.
