The EDB database files of Microsoft’s Exchange Server contain all the messages and emails of the user mailbox account. Users can access the items of this mailbox along with the emails from their local computer with the help of an email client like MS Outlook. This is however possible only when the EDB database is mounted on the Exchange Server and user account mailbox on both the Server and the Client are synchronized. In situations when the Exchange Server database is not mounted or the connection between the Server and the client is severed, emails and other messages cannot be accessed using an email client and it becomes essential to restore Exchange Server database.

Now, there are several components within an EDB database file. Every EDB file is associated with a user mailbox and some public folders having multiple data stores. The default mailbox store consists of two database files namely, Priv1.EDB and Priv1.stm.
