Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning Options For Homeowners
When faced with a waterlogged carpet or sofa, the straightforward solution which occurs to most homeowners is obvious; remove the water. Additionally, smoke damaged fabrics should be thoroughly cleaned, which in theory should remove both the soot and the smell of the smoke. Most homeowners are also aware, however, that putting this seemingly simple idea into practice is more complicated than washing a load of towels. The question of when to do carpet and upholstery cleaning yourself or hire a professional can also be fairly straightforward, as long as you understand the issues.
First, consider the size of the damaged area. A thoroughly soaked throw pillow or area rug can be aired out and shampooed clean with a minimum of fuss. However, wall-to wall carpeting with padding will be much harder to move and will require special machinery to effectively extract moisture. In this context, “special machinery” means far more specialized than the Rug Doctor system available for rent at your local supermarket. Professional carpet & upholstery cleaning companies have machines specifically made for removing large amounts of ...
... water and for using special detergents and processes needed for various fabrics.
Next, consider the type of material which requires cleaning. A wool rug requires different cleaning products than a polyester blend carpet, and any carpet which has been given a stain-repellant treatment will require a specialized detergent to clean it. Carpet padding, by the way, cannot be dried completely once it has been soaked. If your carpet padding has been damaged in this way, it must be replaced rather than cleaned. Draperies and some cushions are slightly more forgiving, but most must be commercially cleaned simply because of their weight or fiber content.
Finally, consider your own knowledge base and available resources. If the damage you’re trying to fix is within the scope of a rental rug cleaner or a commercial washing machine, if you know the type of fabric you have and how to clean it, and if you have the time and resources to do it, then by all means, do your own carpet & upholstery cleaning.
However, you might feel that it would make more sense to take advantage of the resources, knowledge and possible warranties offered by a professional carpet & upholstery cleaning business. After all, they will have solvents and machinery at their disposal that most homeowners don’t, and because their equipment has more extraction power, your carpets or couch will dry quicker and probably look better afterward.
