Respirators 3M are among the popular ones too as they are developed by one of the oldest manufacturers of respirator mask. To be very specific about what N95 mask is, the term N95 is defined by NIOSH under respiratory protection approval regulation (42 CFR 84: part 84 of title 42 of the Code of Federal Regulations) to refer to a filter class. There are in all nine classes of filtering respirator mask at this time and 95% is minimum level of filtration approved by NIOSH; viz. N95, N99, N100 (Not resistant to Oil); R95, R99, R100 (Somewhat resistant to Oil); P95, P99, P100 (Strongly resistant to Oil).



The term 95, 99, 100 refers to 95%, 99%, 99.7% filtration respectively. Usually, all the respirators masks are approved by the NIOSH and have followed markings on them: Manufacturer’s name, the part number (P/R/N), Protection provided by the filter (e.g. N95, R99.) and NIOSH with its logo. And some may even have approval number of the NIOSH as an additional marking for identification. These certified models can be checked on NIOSH. Generally, this kind of filter remove the particles by using certain waxes, resins, and plastics as coatings on the filter material to attract particles with an electrostatic charge that holds them on the surface of the filter material or by using gravity which allows the particles to settle in the filter material.
