Kansas Lawyers: How They Got To Where They Are Today
Kansas lawyers generally narrow themselves to practicing only one specific type of law. Young lawyers-to-be generally have a good feel for what area of law they want to specialize in after they pass the bar. Prior to declaring what type of law fits them best, these students must complete the organized course of study that is required for becoming a lawyer.
For those who want to become attorneys there are three big, post-graduate degrees. They are the Juris Doctor Degree (J.D.), the Master of Laws Degree (LL.M.), and finallythe Doctor of Judicial Science (S.J.D.)
The JD is required of anyone who wants to be a lawyer. The curriculum related to this specialty includes basic legalese as well as an overview of the different specialties. This is the first of two master degrees that lawyers generally earn before they start their practice.
The Master Of Laws degree is a separate masters degree that can be obtained following the J.D. Though it is a masters degree, just like the JD, this degree provides more refined training. Since many lawyers do want to participate in some type of specialty field this ...
... is a degree that almost all of them pursue. Though it is generally a second master's degree, it isn't the last degree that those interested in law careers can strive for.
The Doctor of Judicial Science is the most hight level academic pursuit for lawyers. It is the equivalent of any type of doctorate. Degrees like this are generally for those hoping to follow an academic lifestyle, and occasionally for those interested in becoming judges, though it is isn't required.
Lawyers are not asked to take any specific course of study during their undergrad year, though pre-law programs are available at some schools. Many lawyers will partake in classes to narrow down their specialty even greater and then go on to handle very specific cases in specific fields. For example, many lawyers only manage medical malpractice and some others are only available for family court.
Some lawyers remain in the public pro-bono field and others are only interested in private work, yet others only work out of court. There are also criminal defense lawyers, natural law attorneys and more. It is quite possible to become an attorney and go on to represent a very marginal group of people, if that is your desire.
Kansas lawyers work exhausting hours but enjoy relatively high incomes. They are able to determine, for the most part, what type of law best suits their interests. The fact that attorneys can decide
which type of law interests them the most makes this a highly personal choice of profession.
