Access Control Systems And How They Affect Your Life

Access control systems form a branch of security that utilizes electromagnetic and computerized devices for security in lieu of more traditional lock and key measures. Sometimes these methods can even be implemented to completely eradicate access to a certain location except for specific times and by certain people. Others are rather simple and used just for the bonus security or ease of access.
Chances are that at some time you've come in contact with something that would be considered access control. The magnetic key cards that have pretty much taken over all traditional key locks at hotels are a common example. These cards can be used to open the door for the duration of your stay, but once your stay is over they have to be reactivated, they can be activated to fit any of the hotel rooms or none. Each room has its own unique code, but the cards only remember that code for a certain amount of time. They aren't only available to an individual lock, the way other keys are. When keys are lost, hotel attendants can simply change the code. This is far better than in the past when missing keys demanded a changed ...
... lock or presented safety issues. Hotels opted for the big switch for this very reason, magnetic access is safer.
Another common version of the modern access system, is the remote control entry option that so many vehicles use today. They are electronic and permit users to open their cars from a distance. New models of luxury sedans are now coming standard with keyless engine startup options as well.
Those are just practical, common uses of ACS; there are more complicated versions of this prototype as well. Labs, legal offices, and government buildings, lead the way in this technology by providing access only to employees with specific access credentials. There are even houses today that are being created with more specific styles of technology.
Access control systems are quickly developing into the norm rather than the exception. It appears as though, at some point in the near future, we will all be accessing our homes, jobs, and cars through electronic or magnetic means and throwing out the traditional key all together. Most likely these devices will become so advanced that one day you could step into your home after passing retina scan instead of putting a key in the door.
