It goes without saying that all dental professionals need a curing lamp for their numerous curing tasks. Over the past 25 years light-cured resins have been gradually evolving into their current state of the art nature and this has also led to the evolution of the light-curing technology. Here are some of the curing lamps in use.
The conventional halogen curing lamp has been in use since the late 1970s when halogen lights were are constant fixture for dentists. These lamps are very cheap to buy and are based on a very simple, well-known and nonthreatening technology. Another desirable feature is the fact that they generate very little heat during the curing procedure. However, these lamps have a slower cure time of about 15 seconds. They are also large, quite cumbersome to use, and require frequent replacement. In addition, the lamps require to be plugged into electricity during the procedure.
The enhanced halogen curing lamp was introduced recently into the market. This lamp provides a greater curing intensity thus shortening the curing procedure. ...
... This lamp also operates on a known and proven technology. However this lamp is more expensive than the conventional halogen lamps and it is also large, cumbersome, and produces heat in the curing process. The lamp also requires to be plugged into an electricity supply throughout the procedure.
The light emitting diode (LED) curing lamp is a new concept to the dentistry practice. The lamp is cordless, lightweight and significantly small. The diodes that make the lamp last longer thus limiting frequent replacements. The lamp is also quiet during the procedure, does not generate heat, and shortens the procedure. This ensures that the patient has a more pleasant experience during the curing procedure. However, this technology is very new and the concept is still being developed. This lamp is also quite pricey in comparison to the halogen lamps and its batteries require to be recharged once they run out.
Finally, the plasma arc curing lamp has only been on the market for a few years. Nevertheless, these lamps have been received with enthusiasm due to the fact that they make for rapid curing time (of approximately 3 seconds). This makes the overall procedure unbelievably short, saving professionals a large amount of money in terms of time. However, once the lamp is broken or worn out it can be very costly to replace it comparing it to other curing technologies. The lamps are also heavy and cumbersome and are thus a cause of fatigue to dentists.
