One aspect of starting a business that is sometimes overlooked is logo design and whether you are launching a website or a store in your hometown, your logo is very critical. A logo is one of the most visible aspects of a business, therefore it should send the right message to people about what you as a company stand for and can provide. The symbols and fonts are very critical and convey a lot of meaning, so it is very important that you get it right. I will warn you that this is probably one of the things that you want to hire a professional to do for you, as it is extremely critical. That said, if you are certain that you want to do logo design yourself, then here are four tips to help you.

Don't just begin drawing right away, first you will want to understand what a logo is and how a number of styles convey different meanings. Keep your trademark very simple because you want the message to be very focused and easy to understand. If there are too many aspects to your trademark, then the message will be muddled and unclear to the viewers. Each piece of your trademark should tell something about your business ...
... and be focused in what it says.

Also, you should know what the rules are that other designers use to make killer logos. You don't need a totally unique style of trademark for your business, so check around for some great business logos and see what has been done. Your logo will be the most effective if it stays in the mind of the viewer after they have seen it, it is able to be any size and be understood, and it can be without color and still work, if you have these aspects taken care of then you will likely have a great trademark.

Traditionally, designers will approach logo design with a system in their head that has worked for a lot of people, and this is what I recommend as well. Start by studying up on popular logos and other trademarks in your industry, then write out some of your ideas, give them to as many people as you can for feedback, then finish up the design, using this process as a cycle until you get the perfect logo.

Finally, the kind of logo design software that you use does matter and will effect your design so choose carefully, thinking about how much it costs as well. There are many popular types that a lot of designers use, so try out a few and go with one that you like.
