Hair Texturizer Faqs: How To Use This Product To Straighten Hair

What’s the difference between a hair texturizer and relaxer?
A hair texturizer is essentially a relaxer left in for a shorter period of time. Hair texturizers loosen kinks, but do not straighten hair completely. Your hair should look longer and wavier after using a hair texturizer.
If you want to try a milder product to straighten hair that provides more natural results, try a texturizer. Remember to follow the instructions on the package—if you leave the hair texturizer in for too long, it will act like a relaxer and permanently straighten your hair.
Should I have a professional perform the hair texturizer treatment?
You could, but anyone can perform a hair texturizer treatment at home. Just follow the directions on the box carefully; strengths and leave-in times vary. Be sure to leave the hair texturizer in for the amount of time indicated. Generally, hair texturizers should be left in for less than 10 minutes. You may need to buy multiple boxes if you have longer hair. Always wear protective gloves and apply petroleum ...
... jelly to your hairline to protect your skin.
Are the effects of a hair texturizer permanent?
Yes, similar to getting a perm, once you use a hair texturizer, your hair will not return to its original state. The results will last until the hair that has been processed with the texturizer grows out.
What type of hair texturizer should I use?
Hair texturizers generally fall into two categories: lye and no-lye. Lye-based hair straightening products contain sodium hydroxide—while effective, these products can cause serious damage to the hair and scalp. Other texurizers may use derivatives of lye, including calcium hydroxide, lithium hydroxide and guanidine hydroxide. When used improperly, these chemicals can cause hair breakage or chemical burns.
A safer option is the BodipHier system, which uses sodium carbonate. This significantly less harsh ingredient softens hair bonds without harming the cuticle, or causing long-term damage. Hair is left silky, wavy and easier to style and manage. If you want pin-straight results, use a hair straightener or blow dryer afterwards—your hair should be healthy enough to take a beating from heat tools.
When shopping for products to straighten hair, always check the box for ingredient lists and pH levels. Choose a product to straighten hair with a relatively low pH. The BodipHier system has a pH level of 12, on the safer end of the scale for products to straighten hair; most relaxers have a pH level between 10 and 14.
