What Will Be The Long-term Effect Of Osama’s Death On Iraqi Dinar?
The reports of Osama bin Laden’s death sparked scenes of celebration and jubilation in many parts of the world, but a number of people and countries were not sure how to react to the news. Many felt that it was all ‘too little too late’. They feel that Lade was nothing more than a forgotten symbol: an invisible man, running and hiding to save his skin, a leader unconnected with his followers. But as more information trickled in, it has become clear that he was actively involved in terrorist activities, and had hatched many more terror plots.
Iraq has been plagued by Al Qaeda insurgents since 2003, and life in the country is frequently punctuated by car bombings and suicide attacks; few directed at the American army and the security apparatus of the new Iraqi government, and others designed to kill civilians and spread fear. The question arises as to whether Osama Bin Laden’s death will change the situation in any tangible way.
A normal and secure life is a must for a thriving Iraqi economy. Osama Bin Laden’s death has resulted in a spate of small and big terrorist attacks which have killed and maimed ...
... people indiscriminately. The government, which anticipated just such a reaction, has failed to stop the suicide bombers from blowing themselves and others into bits and pieces. Unless Al Qaeda is destroyed from within, there is no chance of peace, and therefore, no chance of economic recovery for Iraq.
Optimistic political analysts and Iraqi politicians have expressed the hope that the death of Osama bin Laden is the first step towards destruction of Al Qaeda. But Al Qaeda is a huge terrorist organization with a number of people ready to kill themselves and others. The symbolic value of Osama’s death is immense, but it’s too early to comment on the practical value of his killing. The positive news is that America is not intending to pull of Iraq anytime soon, and Iraqi security agencies are getting better at dealing with the Al Qaeda threat.
Compared to 5 years ago, the terrorist organizations in Iraq are a weakened lot. Osama’s survival in the face of frantic efforts by America to catch him had bestowed upon him a mythical status of power, and now this spell has broken too. America and other countries have redoubled their efforts to annihilate Al Qaeda totally, and the death of Osama will motivate the troops to intensify their offensive and burn away the last vestiges of terrorist plague from every corner of the world.
The value of Iraqi Dinar depends on the success of the Americans in Iraq, it depends on the success of the democratic Iraqi government, and it depends on the security situation in Iraq. The presence of the American army in Iraq, the gradual strengthening of the current Iraqi government, and the imminent weakening of the terrorist organizations across the world will set the stage for a new, peaceful Iraq. The process may take a few years, and Osama’s death might not spark a sudden, skyrocketing increase in the value of the Iraqi dinar, but the Iraqi Dinar is set to appreciate highly in long-term.
