Christmas Brings Joy To Everyone

“Christmas comes but once a year.
And when it comes it brings good cheer.
It brings us puddings, it brings us pies,
It brings us everything that is nice.”
When I think Christmas, this is the first thing that comes to my mind. Being in India, I have never seen the beauty of a white Christmas, except in movies, but yes, the Christmas Holidays are always associated in my mind with cold crisp mornings (a pleasant change from the tropical summer, winters in India are always welcome), and unwrapping gifts. Christmas in India has its own uniqueness. While the followers of Christ are part of the midnight mass and go to church, the rest of the society just flows with the Christmas spirit. India being as diverse as it is has adopted every festival and every occasion with ease. The non-muslims join in diwali celabrations, the hindus look forward to a journey of delicacies during Id and the Christians deck up and go around the cities during dusshera. It is thus no surprise that a sizable population of the country celebrates Christmas. Given today’s exposure and commercialization, there is hardly any child ...
... who does not look forward to a few gifts from “Santa Claus”. Malls get decked up in red and green. Santas in all sizes fleet around as children gleefully shake hands with him. Beautifully decorated cribs tell the story of the birth of Christ and Churches all over the country get decked up in their finest, as if having a silent contest of being the best one. While the religious take part in the ceremonies, the fervor, excitement and spirit of Christmas just overflows and rubs everyone into good and joyous celebrations.
The north eastern part of the country deserves special mention when it comes to Christmas. The seven sisters, as the states are known, have a sizable Christian population and you can actually feel the pulsating fervor of Christmas there. Choirs and Carol singers take to the streets and shopping becomes top priority in true Christmas style. Fashion being the strong point of these states and western wear being the natural attire; it is indeed a pretty sight for eyes to catch a glimpse of all the pretty ladies going to church in their best dresses. And then the celebrations start, the wine flows and the food diminish by leaps and bounds.
Yes Christmas in India is a time for celebrations indeed, a celebration of the countries diversity and secularity. But then again, those are just words. Christmas in India is exactly what it is all over the world: a time to celebrate with friends, family and catch up on all the lost moments in the daily humdrum of life.
