What Veterinary Technician Majors Don't Learn In School
What veterinary technician majors don’t learn in school is in some ways more important than what they do learn in school, although the coursework of a required veterinary technician program is obviously indispensable for anyone pursuing this career. There are many things you should already know and many skills you should innately possess before beginning a veterinary technician degree or certificate program. There are also many things you will learn on the job that you will probably not learn in school.
What Veterinary Technician Majors Don’t Learn in School
Love for Animals – If you don’t have compassion and love for animals, you won’t care about your job much, and you probably won’t excel in your career. Make sure you’re in this field for the right reasons before you begin your training.
Communication Skills – Some people are great with animals, but they are not so great with people. You will quickly learn as a veterinary technician that if ...
... you can’t communicate with the people that bring their animals in, you can’t do your job. From greeting people at the front desk to explaining procedures and giving advice, the vet tech’s job requires lots of communication with people.
Stamina – You may have to be on your feet for eight or more hours as a veterinary technician, and you may need to lift heavy objects (and heavy animals!). It is important that you know about the rigors of this job before spending as long as two years training for the career.
Thick Skin – Sometimes, there is nothing you can do to save an animal, and sometimes, you will be forced to cope with animal death in your job, even when there is technically something (expensive) that could be done. If you don’t have a thick skin, you won’t last long in this profession.
