How To Provide Academic Support To High School Students?
Public schools provides challenging curriculum to engage students in studies. Some students struggle to understand the concepts especially in Math, Science subjects. Parents, teachers as well as students should put their hands together to overcome the difficulties of learning academic subjects.
Parents and teachers play a wide role in educating a child. Parents give non-academic support whereas teachers provide academic hold. Now we shall see each of their contribution which helps the children to reach rigorous standards in studies.
As Parents:
• Maintain a proper diet schedule for your children. Health is most important factor which makes children active.
• Check whether your child is completing the daily home works and assignments. Also track their test reports.
• Sit and talk with children. Analyze their difficult subjects in which they need help.
• Arrange private tutors to accelerate children learning activities.
As Personal Tutors:
• Understand Student’s Capabilities:
Each student is unique and has different learning styles. Therefore ...
... talk with students before starting with lessons. Understand the students’ current academic level and based on that proceed further. If the student is good in Math but fails in physics then concentrate on teaching that subject.
Give real time examples which provide way for easy understanding. Through practical analysis, students can learn well. Therefore encourage project-based learning.
• Be a Counselor:
Be a tutor as well as counselor which motivate students. Some students may fail due to illness or mental stress, fear of exams, etc. Hence motivate students by saying positive stories and appreciating their works.
If a student is good in painting, give positive feedbacks on seeing the painting works. This will encourage him/her and gradually teach academic subjects. Have interactive classes, ask questions and also clarify the doubts of students.
• Offer Help to Solve Mathematical Problems:
When a student asks for help to solve problems or complete assignments, just help them. Students can gain knowledge only by discovering new things. Therefore as personal tutors provide only guidance to discover new things but don’t solve the problem yourself. If you start providing solutions, students will lack in searching for it.
Split up the big problem into sub modules and give overall idea about the concept. Then make students to work out themselves.
• Communicate with Parents and Get Feedbacks:
Collaboration of private tutors with parents is MUST. Hence you can track records on student’s activities. Through communicating, you can get many answers for questions like,
1. Is that student comfortable in the learning room?
2. Is child healthy and active?
3. Is that child obeys the instructions of private tutors?
Thus as private tutors you can change the teaching methodology if needed. To be a tutor is gift, so utilize those opportunities to provide academic support to students.
