Duvall Catering - Delighting Clients For 30 Years

Steve Wenger is CEO of Duvall Catering, which has been in business some 30 years
Take heart, worried parents of young adults. Inside your surfer dude child may be a businessman who one day will grow a multimillion-dollar company.
Exchange the beach for snow-capped mountains, and that is where Steve Wenger found himself in 1977. He was a newly minted college graduate with a degree in accounting and finance.
Trouble is, then as now, the economy was in the pits. Jobs were scarce. Wenger saw several hundred grads competing at career fairs for a handful of positions.
He heard prospects were better in Southern California. So Wenger headed west, with a layover in Colorado. And stayed. Before long, he had joined the ranks of local ski bums who worked in restaurants and bounced from job to job.
Fast forward 34 years. Wenger is head of Duvall Catering and Event Design in Charleston, a catering and event planning company that just marked its 20th anniversary under his leadership. He has built his staff from a few people to 100-plus. Since 1991, they have catered and planned more than 10,000 Charleston ...
... affairs.
"Everything works pretty smooth. I'm lucky," says Wenger.
But it took more than sheer luck to make it to this place.
Risk and reward
Duvall Events is housed in a 10,500-square-foot space off Sam Rittenberg Boulevard. It's a maze of small and large rooms, offices and storage and includes a sizable kitchen and pastry shop. Out back is a separate 6,000-square-foot warehouse filled with chandeliers, sofas, chairs and myriad decorating props.
On the Saturday of Easter weekend, Duvall was handling four weddings. That's not unusual for spring in Charleston, and Wenger says events can peak to six on a single day. But that's the limit, for good reason.
"We can have a six-event day and not have to apologize to anyone Monday morning. If we go over that, we're gambling."
Details are everything in this business. Take the packing list for the recent Family Circle Tennis Tournament. The pages stack up 2 inches thick. And it is this attention to detail that enables Duvall to deliver exceptional catering in Charleston SC. Duvall also offers the same delightful catering in Greenville SC.
