Up to 18 million Americans suffer from sleep apnea, and the most common treatment for obstructive sleep apnea is Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). A CPAP machine delivers a constant pressurized stream of air from a tube to a mask worn over the nose or nose and mouth, allowing the air to directly enter the airways. Although CPAP is an effective treatment for sleep apnea, some patients find it difficult to get comfortable wearing a CPAP mask and headgear. Often the solution is not a different treatment but a different type or style of CPAP mask that the patient finds more acceptable.

Check for a mask that has a different type of cushion. The CPAP mask cushion is designed not only to stop air leakage but for comfort. However, some styles may cause the mask to create sore spots or pressure points that are continually aggravated with regular usage. There are masks with adjustable forehead pads, inflatable cushions, and low profile masks designed for eyeglass wearers. A newer type of mask has a softer foam-like material similar to memory foam that conforms to the wearer’s face and a sliding ...
... feature that allows the headgear to move during sleep while the mask remains in place.

Another mask type available is has a gel material which also molds to the wearer’s face for comfort. One style of gel mask features a wire that allows the wearer to bend and shape the mask to the desired shape; another has an inflatable cushion that can be adjusted for comfort while preventing air leaks.

One option is not a mask at all: the nasal pillow CPAP mask is comprised of two flexible nasal pillows or prongs that rest under or are inserted into the nostrils. The nasal pillow masks tend to have minimal headgear and are capable of being worn while reading or watching TV. The nasal pillow masks currently available have become very popular as they provide less face contact and excellent results.

In conclusion, CPAP is the most common and most effective method of alleviating sleep apnea symptoms. If you are hesitant to use your CPAP consistently due to mask soreness, discomfort or leakage, consider investing in a different type of CPAP mask. There are a wide variety of CPAP masks on the market today. Now days, a CPAP user does not have to sacrifice comfort over compliance. You should be able to find a CPAP mask that fits your requirements, does not change your lifestyle and improves your sleeping habits. This will allow you to receive the optimum and necessary benefits of your CPAP machine.
