Travertine Characteristics

Many people like to use travertine because it is very durable. When it comes to flooring materials, you need to have something that is going to stand the test of time. The longevity of limestone is something that is a well known fact. Geologist, architects and contractors can all agree that travertine is up to the task of providing long lasting use and appeal. Travertine also features beautiful colors and texture. Every piece is unique based on color and porosity. Travertine is very porous. There are several grooves on each piece of travertine that need to be sealed in order to improve strength and durability.

Travertine Grades

There are three grades when it comes to travertine. Premium, standard and commercial are the names of the grades but they are also referred to as first, second and third. Each grade represents the quality of the stone. Since stones come from the quarry at different elevations and locations, each slab of travertine will be different from the rest. Travertine grades are based on the consistency of the cut, thickness and color. Grade is also determined based on the porosity of the stone. Stones with several larger or unfilled holes are of a lower grade than stone tiles that have small, filled holes.

Travertine Cuts

Travertine can take on two totally different looks depending on the kind of cut it undergoes. Travertine that is vein cut, is cut along the vein. Vein cut travertine will appear to have long veins running across the tile. The other cut is called the Fleuri cut or the cross cut. This cut is made against the vein. Cross cut tiles appear to have circular swirls and are usually very strong. No matter the grade, color or cut, The Stoneline Group can help you find the best solution for your project.
