I recently received a Tesco Coupon in the mail. It prompted me to do my first ever online shopping, using the Tesco voucher code. My neighbour seems to have a delivery from Tesco every week and I always amazed at the convenience of having your groceries delivered direct to your door. I decided to give it a go. Computer started, internet connected and away I go. I start clicking through the “aisles” and I am amazed at just how easy it seems to be. I find some excellent “BOGOF” offers and I still have my Tesco promo code to use later. I am really starting to enjoy myself as I click my way through fruits, vegetables and deliciously fresh fish. The best thing is that I can order in bulk and I won’t have to worry about carrying it home. This is groundbreaking! With that in mind, I go back to the wine department and practically ordered myself a vineyard, along with 5kg of potatoes and 16 tins of dog food.

By now, the Tesco shopping basket list is getting longer and longer. Indeed I really think they should replace the word basket with “uber” ...
... sized trolley. I quickly check to see if I have everything and proceed to organise a delivery slot. The system allows you to book a delivery day and time. I choose Wednesday at 10.00am. The delivery is actually cheaper than the cost of petrol to go to and from the supermarket. I have also avoided the stress of queueing in the supermarket. I always seem to get stuck behind an old lady with the speed of a snail or a family with a trolley bigger than a mountain. Then, when I finally get to the till, the printer roll runs out or I am served by a cashier in training, which simply takes forever. I am currently not missing a visit to the supermarket at all.

Its time to pay. I type in my Tesco discount code and enter my credit card into the secure SSL server. Once my transaction is confirmed, they congratulate me on my completed order. Congratulations is actually required as I am not wonderfully computer literate. I feel great and I am starting to understand the pleasures of shopping online. Wednesday eventually arrives and I wait with baited breath to see if the delivery actually turns up. Maybe I made a mistake or clicked the wrong button at the last minute. However, Tesco don’t let me down and at 10.00am they arrive outside my door. I run down to the door and I must say that the delivery man was absolutely gorgeous. I showed him the kitchen and almost wanted to ask him if he would like a glass of wine. Thankfully I resisted making such a fool of myself for once.

Virtual shopping versus “old fashioned shopping”

I am now a convert to online shopping. It takes away a lot of stress and is more time efficient. I can even do my “big shop” from my office, if the boss isn’t watching. So is online shopping going to close down supermarkets? I don’t think so, not in the near future anyway. Some people go to the supermarket so they get the chance to talk to someone, especially older people. And where would the mums go for some breakfast after they have done the school run? I think supermarkets are going to be around for some time but in my world, online shopping is the only way forward. Its definitely the future.
