Competitive edge can sometimes be subjective. Establishing the standards can be tricky for a company that is just beginning. Identifying the best is actually a pursuit of the ideal. With the ever changing business conditions, we task people in the company to perform based on ideal qualities based on quantifiable aspects. When someone works a certain amount of numbers for the company within the prescribed working time, then, the company puts those numbers as the standard for the rest of the workers. The task of benchmarking revolutionizes the work conditions in small to big ways.

The described example about is a simple way to discuss the process of benchmarking. In a more technical light, this is a point of reference where all processes and methodologies will be compared and analyzed. The purpose of setting up standards started out in the manufacturing industry, as a means to control the quality of products that are being manufactured. It saves time, resources and minimizes the risks that could affect internal and external conditions. If the standards are set, there will be more control of quality and less risks and expenses.

As ...
... a management tool
Businesses are under internal and external pressures. There is the desire to move up the ladder. Workers are your basic unit of force in a business and they will be measured using particular standards set y the company's human resource department or a separate benchmarking service provider. The external issues are related to competitors, the demand and supply of products/services and legalese. It takes a lot of analytical processes to effectively implement standards that will then be useful for running the company to success.

Different tools
Benchmarking comes in many formats. Internal benchmark is done internally, most of the time, between business units. A competitive benchmark is set for competing companies. For industrial services and processes, a functional benchmark is utilized. If the industries are unrelated but require standardizing, generic benchmarks come into the picture. Generally, the process that is done for any of these services is done using different analytical and statistical data, research, testing, improvement and implementation. It is a costly venture that demands time, money and technology. One has to be guided that getting a proper team for such a venture needs to be experts, dedicated to the project.

Limits
When it comes to this process, care should be given since it is possible for the project to end in indifference between companies and competitors. It is also necessary to take note that this is a continuous process and it requires the team to always be aware of trends, changes and new processes in order to present a solid and more adaptable framework for the organization to follow.
