Most of the people today know what SAP is, however, there are still some of them who when hear the word SAP say what is SAP? Well the answer to that question is that SAP is a German global software house that was established in 1972 by five former IBM employees in Mannheim, Germany. The word SAP is actually a German word meaning Systeme, Anwendungen, and Produkte. The English translation for SAP is Systems Applications and Products. The software house now is internationally recognized and is the world’s leading inter-enterprise software company and the world’s fourth leading independent software supplier. They create and supply all kinds of software from a basic device driver to complex software like Operating System, Anti-Virus, windows utility to treat any problem and many other software that are required in the world of technology.
When the SAP was originally formed the main idea or the concept behind its formation was to provide the customers with the ability to interact with a common corporate database for a comprehensive range of applications however, today the situation is totally reversed as today numerous ...
... applications have been assembled and they are being used by IBM, Microsoft etc themselves to run their businesses.
In the start SAP was run on the mainframe called R/2, however, the number of this mainframe were numbered, that is, as soon as the SAP caught up to the client server model a newer version of this mainframe was released named R/3 and this version turned out to be one of the most popular and stable version. Therefore today all of the SAP applications are made around this R/3 system. This system is capable of running on a number of platforms like Microsoft windows, Linux etc. without any problem.
The company has created and introduced a number of products in the market; however, among all of them the most popular products of the company are SAP Enterprise Resource Planning or SAP ERP and SAP Business Objects software or SAP BO. Some of the other products of the company are NetWeaver platform, Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC) solutions, Duet, Performance management solutions, RIFD and many more; the list just goes on getting longer and longer. SAP has not only offered systems services or applications; SAP has also introduced SOA capabilities in the form of the web services that can be used to control the applications.
SAP has many partners that help SAP in completing their products and then launching them. The names of the partners are Global Services Partners, Global Software Partners and Global Technology Partners. Apart from these large partners there is Solutions extensions partners too. Each of these partners performs a specific role in helping the company.
Initially SAP targeted larger companies with their products; however, they are targeting small and medium scale businesses so that the products they are releasing get popular more quickly. According to the survey done some time ago, it was found that there were 38,400 employees in over 50 countries and the number of SAP’s customers was more than 36,200.
