1. Commercial flyer sizes – The first thing that you will be probably wondering about is the size. While typically you can customize the size to any dimension that you like, using standard sizes helps you make the process faster. Since most printing companies can accommodate these sizes, you will also have no trouble sending your drafts to them with little to no risk of bad conversions. For your reference, here are the standard commercial sizes you can use.
a. 8.5 x 11 – Standard letter sized. Pretty large and pretty standard
b. 4.25 x 5.5 – ¼ letter sized, small, easy to distribute and cheap
c. 4.25 x 11 or 8.5 x 5.5 – Wide or long type
d. 9 x 12 ...
... – Large type
2. Paper material standards – You will always have the opportunity to choose the right paper material to use in printing flyers. There is more to the paper than your standard rough paper. There are actually plenty of kinds of paper with different thicknesses, coatings and textures. This can vary between different flyer printers, but you will have to ask or discover which options are available to you. Listed down below are a few of the common types of paper material standards that you should watch out for.
a. Uncoated – Standard, cheapest and simplest
b. Coated, glossy 1 side – Coated with a special coating on one side (the cover side)
c. Coated glossy both sides – Special coating applied to both sides for that gleam
d. Uncoated with glossy text – No coating on the paper, but glossy coating on the text itself
e. Glossy coating with glossy text – Glossy coating on paper and glossy inks on text
3. Color printing standards – While the current trend is to print in full color, there are still a few options that you can try so that you can manage the colors and the cost. Here are a few of the options that you should be aware of.
a. Full color printing – This is the standard full color printing with vivid color on the whole flyer.
b. Black ink printing with color paper – This is the cheap option with black ink used for printing and then colored paper is paired to make it look interesting
c. Black ink printing with white paper – Cheapest form with least amount of impact
d. Spot color printing - only certain elements are in full color. This helps you create color flyers without actually spending too much on full color inks.
Now, even as a beginner, you should know all the important technical details that you will have to choose from. Just remember all the items above and review them if you can.
