Ferrari 458 Italia - Engine & Emissions
The arrival of the 458 Italia continues the Ferrari tradition in producing extreme cars by redefining the sport car driving and performance.
With the 458 Italia, Ferrari has obtained a significant achievement in its category in terms of emissions reduction and improved vehicle dynamics. Ferrari 458 Italia engine capacity and power have been decidedly increased compared to previous models, however a reduced internal friction allowed to reduce consumption levels by 13 percent compared to those of the F430. Fuel tank capacity is also reduced and consequently its total weight, without discriminating running time and range. In the specific, the fuel tank capacity has been reduced to 86 liters from the 95 of the previous Ferrari 8 cylinders model.
Ferrari 458 Italia’s cylinder block has four scavenge pumps. Two of them collect oil from the cylinder heads and engine’s front and rear thru dedicated oil recovery ducts outside the crankcase; whether the remaining two collect oil underneath the crank throws. The recovery ducts of the latter are interconnected in two groups of four cylinders to optimize the scavenge function ...
... and create a strong vacuum (800 mbar) around the crankshaft. This solution allows reducing power losses caused by the friction and by the pistons’ pumping action. The engine oil pressure pump features variable displacement geometry which reduces the amount of power absorbed at high revs. Lowering the pump displacement increases the power available at the crankshaft for the same amount of fuel used.
The piston skirts are Graphal®-coated and the thickness of the compression rings has been reduced in order to significantly limit the friction between piston and liner, which ultimately benefit fuel consumption and performance. The camshafts are subjected to a super-finishing process aimed to reduce surface roughness (Ra) to less than 0.05 micron and minimize the coefficient of friction between the cam lobes and tappets. The hydraulic tappets are also super-finished to then being coated with a Diamond-Like Carbon which it is aimed to also reduce friction and improve engine efficiency.
The usage of the GDI Split Injection improves engine performance thanks to the combined effect derived from the fuel/air mix cooling inside the combustion chamber and the increased compression ratio and volumetric efficiency. A high injection pressure (200 bars) guarantees adequate petrol pulverization as well as optimal mixing combustion up to 9,000 rpm. This feature also translates into an increase in performance and reduced fuel consumption.
As every new Ferrari, the 458 Italia has a unique design approach and technology innovations to achieve indisputable performance and driving experience. Inquiry about the Ferrari 458 today at Authorized Ferrari dealers.
