Five Ways To Get Employees To Want To Work

I recently toured a capability where the all the employees seemed happy and thrilled to work. The employees were actively unavailable and when asked by management to work harder, nearer and longer, they gladly did so. Output levels continually amplified, accidents were down and they willingly presented to help other departments to meet work demands.

It is most likely easy to imagine what workplace utopia looks like but where do you start?

1. Employees have to believe that their organization cares about them. They have to belief that they will hold them and everyone else answerable for their work production consistently, hold true to their values, reward loyalty and provide opportunities to improve themselves somehow. This strength be financially, with training, respect or even status.

2. Don't expect it to happen suddenly. Give it time. You might even experience some resistance. Resistance is good. This means that you are "upsetting the apple cart" a little. No one can change without pushing limits. Explore what the resistance is, readjust, regroup and stick to the plan. There might be a few good ideas ...

3. Don't change something for the sake of altering and don't change too often. If change is hard on people, too many changes will be extra stressful. Stick with your changes. You can't measure something that wasn't in place long sufficient to measure and your people will lose trust that the changes will make a difference.

4. Establish goals that make sense for your business. Explain the process. The most brilliant idea won't be implemented if no one understands what they are trying to realize or why.

5. Keep it unsullied and in focus. Revisit it often or at scheduled intervals. If you forgot about it, so did your
People.
