MRSA stands for methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus infections. These infections are caused by strains of staph bacteria which are resistant to or do not respond to common ways of treating staph infections. Since these infections are difficult to treat they may also develop into dangerous forms of diseases and can even result in death.

Staph bacteria is very commonly found on your body without it ever causing any harm. But when the body’s defense mechanism is compromised like a wound, injury or a compromised immune system like HIV or cancer then these bacteria can breach the skin’s surface causing a lot of infections. In case of MRSA the infection can reach the bloodstream and cause serious illnesses and even toxic shock syndrome leading to death of the patient.

MRSA infections are also highly contagious and can easily transfer from one person to another and since treating mrsa infection is difficult so it is best to learn how you can avoid these dangerous infections and prevent them from disrupting your life or of those close to you. Here are some common tips to avoid MRSA infections.

1.Wash ...
... hands frequently with antibacterial soap and water. Hands should be washed after visiting the toilet, visiting public places such as hospitals, markets places, cinemas etc.
2.Since it is not always possible to wash hands with soap and water it is best to carry an alcohol based sanitizer on your person wherever you go and ensure its usage. This will kill the germs present on your hands.
3.Avoid contact with any person known to be infected with MRSA. Even if you do not know whether the person is infected or not avoid coming in contact with any other person’s wound or injury.
4.Keep wounds and any cuts in the skin clean and covered. Clean periodically with antiseptic solution and change bandages.
5.Do not share personal items like towels, razors or hairbrushes and toothbrushes.
6.Places such as swimming pools, school lockers, hospitals, health care centers and gymnasiums are breeding grounds for these bacteria. Do not walk bare feet in these places. Try wearing special footwear made for these places.
7.Wash and bathe after visiting these places. Wear dry clean clothes after bathing.
8.Wash and wipe all equipment used while exercising with an antiseptic solution. Always wear fresh clothes while exercising and wash these clothes in hot water and detergent after the exercise.
9.It is prudent to check the cleanliness and hygiene maintenance routines of such places. Do not be shy of asking the staff what kind of cleanliness routines they maintain. It is your health at stake, so do not go to these places if you are not satisfied with their cleanliness.
10.If you are hospitalized please enquire about the cleanliness and sanitizing routines they maintain and be aware of all the procedures carried out on you and they hygiene standards.

It is your life and your health, so taking these simple precautions now will save you much trouble later on. So be aware of your surroundings and take care of yourself.
