Getting To Know Your Perfume
Fragrances of perfumes consist of all sorts of substances such as plant oils, aroma compounds, fixatives, solvents and many more. When three notes of a perfume lie on top of one other, it is called an accord. The top notes or head notes are the first impression of a perfume. But these are volatile and only last for about 10-15 minutes. They are sharp and as soon as you spray, you can smell the top notes. Middle notes or heart notes come to life just before the top notes die. They are usually softer and a main ingredient of the perfume’s real fragrance. Base notes or dry-down notes evaporate slowly and emerge lastly. It is stronger and deeper bringing out the essence of the perfume. It can last up to 24 hours according to the retaining power of the perfume. Initially it blends with the middle notes an hour after application. Perfumes consist mainly of essential oils and aromas. Once applied on skin it mixes with the body temperature and skin chemistry to give out the scent. Our olfactory memories also contribute to liking or disliking a perfume. Our personal preferences when it comes to perfumes vary according to the age, gender ...
... and changes in our bodies. There are fruity, floral, woody and musky perfumes and all fragrances belong to almost 9 olfactory families.
However it is important to remember that splashing yourself with your favourite fragrance in abundance is not proper. If you are attending cocktail parties, meeting with clients, attending a corporate event or a dinner choose a perfume that is subtle and not too strong. If you are simply having fun at a party, a night of clubbing or looking for a bit of glamour at a wedding, go for a deeper and a richer fragrance that is not too strong. If you are walking, getting some shopping done, taking a stroll on a beach or out in the cold weather, consider a perfume that lasts longer and gives out a stronger scent. The pulse points to consider when wearing a perfume are, wrists, right and left sides of your neck, behind your knees, crook of your elbow and the inside of your ankles. Just spray once on the pulse point. Wearing a perfume after a shower is more effective than wearing it when your skin is dry. Sometimes, perfumes have their range of body lotions, shower gels and deodorants. Using these products with the same fragrance is called layering a scent. These add additional scent to the perfume. Perfumes are usually designed by experts and fashion designers.
Marc Jacobs is the creative director of Louis Vuitton, the popular French design house. His fashion label produces a range of perfumes including, Marc Jacobs, Daisy, Lola and Bang. Daisy Eau de Toilette is perhaps one of the most popular of his perfumes. It has top notes of strawberry and violet leaves, mid notes of violet petals and jasmine along with base notes of musk and vanilla.
