The following food products are low in fiber (less than 10 grams per serving), and light enough to eat for diverticulitis turmoil-ups.
Grain Products:
* Enriched refined white bread, bread, bagels, English muffins
* Plain cereals such as Cheerios, cornflakes, K Cream Wheat, Rice Krispies, Special
* Garut cakes, tea biscuits, soda crackers, plain Melba toast
* Rice, pasta and noodles fine white
* Avoiding grains
Fruit:
* Fruit juices except prune juice
* Apple sauce, apricot, banana (half), cantaloupe, canned fruit cocktail, grapes, melons, peaches, watermelon
* Avoid raw fruits and dry, and fruit.
Vegetables:
* Vegetable juice
* Potato (without skin)
* Alfalfa sprouts, beets, green / yellow beans, carrots, celery, cucumber, eggplant, lettuce, mushrooms, green / red peppers, potatoes (peeled), squash, zucchini
* Avoiding the family of cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, cabbage, kale, Swiss chard, etc.
Meat and Protein Choice:
* Cooked properly, tender meat, fish and eggs
* Avoid beans and lentils
* Avoid all nuts and seeds, and foods that contain seeds (such as yogurt)
Milk:
* As directed by your health care provider
Diverticulitis: After Flare-Up
When symptoms of diverticulitis increases, you may ease off of low-residue diet and gradually add more fiber back into your diet. High-fiber diet is very important in preventing future diverticulitis attacks. As you increase your fiber intake, do not forget to increase your fluid intake as well.
