Categorization Of Content Management System
Content Management System (CMS) is a computer application used to create, edit, manage, search and publish different types of digital media and content. It is mostly used for storing, controlling and publishing documentation of the company such as articles, operator manuals, technical manuals and brochures for marketing.
Today, large numbers of Content Management System are available. Some of them are available for free and are open source while others are propriety and commercial. Some of them target a small content type while others target everything. Also some CMS are based on content type like e-commerce, e-learning, images, audio, video, etc. But we can categorize Content Management System into three main categories with their respective domain of usage.
1] Enterprise CMS
Enterprise Content Management (ECM) is the strategy, method and tool used for capturing, managing, storing, preserving and delivering content and documents related to the process of the organization. These high-powered software packages are usually solutions for delivering effective content management for use on an enterprise level ...
... or a corporate level.
They can integrate all corporate functionalities such as shipping and delivery systems, invoicing, employee and human resource issues, customer relations, document management and transactional systems, and much more. They are actually designed to help an organization or a corporation to become more efficient and cost-effective, increase the accuracy and functionalities by decreasing human errors and customer response times. ECM tools and strategies allow the management of an organization’s unstructured information. It brings data management down to the user level so many users can add their individual piece to a integrated large system.
2] Web CMS
A Web Content Management System (WCMS) is content management system software which is usually created for use of the web and implemented as a web application for creating and managing the HTML content. They can have many functions or can have one specific function they are centered around.
It is mainly used to manage and control a large and dynamic collection of HTML documents and their associated images. They allow non technical users to update portions of a website and it makes a developer’s life easy by incorporating functionalities to a website quickly and easily. It also allows a lead developer to include other functions or features in the site development and maintenance.
Most systems use database to store content, and metadata that is needed by the system. Mostly content is stored as XML so that it can be re-used and also enables flexible presentation options. Administration here is done through browser-based interfaces. It is actually a Website maintenance tool for non-technical administrators.
3] Component CMS
Component Content Management System (CCMS) manages content at granular level and not at a document level. It is mainly used for multi-channel customer facing content that is marketing, usage, learning and support. It can be a separate system or it can also be a functionality of some other Content Management System type. Each component of this CMS represents a single topic, concept or asset like images, table or product description. Managing contents at components level gives many benefits such as increases consistency and accuracy, reduction in maintenance costs, reduced delivery costs and translation costs.
