Weatherstripping is a method that is used to conceal gaps around windows and exterior doors. Selection of weatherstripping depends upon factors like climate, visibility, and susceptibility to weather. Weatherstripping is usually applied to the joints where two surfaces meet and move relative to each other.

Following are some guidelines for applying weatherstripping:

• No matter which type of weatherstripping you use, it should be applied to clean and dry surfaces.
• It should be applied in temperatures above 20°F (-7°C).
• You should measure the area to be weatherstripped twice before you cut anything.
• You should use quality weather-stripping to get long lasting results.

There are various types of weatherstripping methods available for doors and floors, each with its own level of effectiveness, durability and installation difficulty. The method of weatherstripping varies from simple to complex. You can choose a method as per your energy saving needs like cost, durability, appearance and ...
... installation.

Different types of weatherstripping are as follows:

• V-Strip: This type of weatherstripping is made of either metal or vinyl. It is tough, long-lasting and simple to install, without the use of tools.
• Adhesive-Backed Foam or Tape: Made from rubber, foam or sponge rubber, it can be installed in the same manner as V-strip to help seal doors and windows. It comes in various widths and thicknesses, and the tape is self-adhesive and easy to install.
• Tension seal: It is used inside the track of a double-hung or sliding window, and on top and sides of a sliding door. It is durable, invisible and very effective.
• Felt: It is used around a door or window for concealing. It is easy to install as well as cost effective. Felt usually lasts one to two years before it needs to be replaced.
• Interlocking Metal: This is the most expensive yet most compound weatherstripping, just like two V-strips placed on the door and door frame, making a tight seal. Installing this weatherstripping needs professional skills.
• Serrated metal: It is vinyl-backed weather stripping that combines the strength of metal with the application ease of felt.
