In the United States Fathers Day is celebrated on the 3rd Sunday, of the month of June. In 1972, President Lyndon B. Johnson proclaimed this to be a national holiday. Although celebrating dads happens all over the world on different dates and has for hundreds of years, there are few clues to origins of the American Father’s Day. Father's Day complements Mother's Day, which is celebrated just a month earlier in the year. Father's Day took much longer to become an official holiday, as many people feared it becoming commercialized. Because of the existence of Mother's Day, it only seemed appropriate that father's day would too exist, giving thanks to both parents and not just one. Much of the credit of the creation of Father's Day goes to Sonora Smart Dodd, whose father, a Civil war veteran, raised her and her five siblings after their mother died in childbirth. She had the idea during a sermon on one of the First Mother's Day celebrations in 1909. From Spokane, Washington, she proposed a celebration of Fathers and local religious supported the idea, making June 1910 the first celebration of Fathers Day.
