Sonora’s inspiration for Father’s Day arose during a sermon on one of the first Mother's Day celebrations in 1909. From Spokane, Washington, she proposed a Father’s Day and the local churches and religious community supported the idea. On June 19, 1910 young members of the local WMCA and YWCA wore roses to church honoring living and deceased fathers and so the first celebration of Fathers Day was established. Father's Day took much longer to become an official holiday, as many people, including Congress saw it becoming just another excuse for commercialized promotions. The US Congressed defeated several attempts to recognize Fathers Day as a national holiday. Although President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1966 issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers, it wasn’t until 1972 that President Richard Nixon made it a permanent national holiday.
