However her Mother's Day Proclamation, a pacifist reaction to the butchery of the American Civil War and the Franco-Prussian War lasted for only ten or so years. The power behind the official formation of Mother’s Day was Anna Jarvis, who in memory of her deceased mother first requested a Sunday service honoring mothers. She thought that many people did not appreciate and recognize the importance of their own mothers while they are still alive. She wanted people to show their love and gratitude before their mothers passed away. Through her hard work in a lobbying campaign with help from the World's Sunday School Association, she was finally able to convince legislators in states and in the U.S. Congress to support the holiday. In the United States, Mothers Day became an official national holiday when President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the second Sunday in May to be Mothers Day.
