How Do Beetles Assist In Natural Pest Control?
Nature has developed several inherent methods to help prevent plants from getting killed by pests and harmful insects. Beetles are one of the most effective live tools that prey on a large group of common pests and insects found in our lawns and gardens.
A ladybug is not only beautiful but also amazingly helpful in keeping your lawn grasses and plants free from aphids, mites, whiteflies and several other harmful bugs. In their larvae stage, these beetles eat on around 40 aphids a day. They are one of the best friends your garden can house.
Similarly Ground Beetles is a super predator that feeds on several soil-dwelling pests like root maggots, caterpillars, snails. Unlike ladybugs, ground beetles become better hunters once they reach their adult stage.
Tiger Beetles belonging to Cicindelidae family is similar to ground beetles are excellent predators of insects on the whole. They feed on most of the common insects found in our lawns and gardens. They grab the prey with their jaws. They even dig tiny holes to trap their prey. For their tiger-like patches and designs and their high level of skills in catching ...
... prey they are known as Tiger beetles. There are around 200 species of this special beetle variety and they are found in desert as well as forested areas.
Yet another unique and useful variety of beetle that helps in natural weed control is known as Tortoise Beetles. They are leaf beetles and they have a body shaped like a turtle. They almost look like a lady bug but are of a totally different species. They feed on weeds like thistle, burdock, bindweed and horse nettle. However, a word of caution is needed in here – Tortoise beetles are not fit for gardens that house plants of sweet potato, eggplant and tomato. Apparently, these beetles are found of these items and they can munch into your vegetation alongside preying on weeds. They are also notorious for eating hardwood trees. But otherwise they are quite powerful in weed control. Golden tortoise and thistle tortoise are the common tortoise beetles used for killing bindweed and musk thistle respectively.
Two-spotted melyrid is yet another amazing beetle that can not only protect your plants from pests but also add color to your flowers. It is a flower beetle that has orange body and neck and shiny green wings. It has pair of dots on its orange neck. These beetles when fully grown look very attractive and they feed on aphids chiefly.
Thistle-head weevil is a weed killer that was brought to America from Europe and Asia for control of musk thistle. These beetles have a pronounced snout and are brown to yellow in color. They lay eggs on flower buds of musk thistle and the larvae feed on tender musk thistles.
