The procedure is performed comfortably in the office. Your doctor will determine if you are a candidate and perform the procedure the same day. It’s best to avoid aspirin, anti-inflammatory medications and stop smoking. Areas that were not treated during the first visit can be treated in about two weeks. Additional treatments of previously treated areas is performed after about one month of healing. Each patient’s treatment is individualized. Two or more separate sessions are usually required to achieve optimum results. There is no guarantee that new spider veins won’t appear as time passes. You may need further treatments of new veins as they emerge.
Overall, spider vein treatment is very safe and associated with a low likelihood of potential complications. Some risks include change in skin sensation, unfavorable scarring, bleeding, infection, poor healing of injection sites, damage to deeper structures, allergies, skin discoloration and swelling, skin contour irregularities, pain, and need for further injection therapy. While technically, Sclerotherapy is a treatment for varicose veins, this treatment has not been tested on veins larger than three millimeters. Additionally, patient’s should not received treatment if there is a known allergy to polidocanol (Asclera), have an acute vein or blood clotting (thromboembolic) disease, or are pregnant or nursing.
Although genetics, weight gain, prolonged sitting or standing, pregnancy, and hormonal shifts are some of the contributing factors. Spider vein treatment can be performed on people of any age as long you have a positive outlook, realistic goals, and are committed to the prescribed course of treatment.
