Computers For Stock Trading: Back-ups & Storage Features
When buying, or better yet building Computers For Stock Trading, it’s important to consider some key components. Hi, I’m Eddie Z, author of the comprehensive guide, How to Buy a Trading Computer & Save Thousands. I’ve been trading electronically for more than 15 years and I have tried lots and lots of different technologies. I know what works, what doesn’t, and what you should stay far, far away from.
Obvious components – the processor, motherboard, RAM, etc. – need to be of particularly high quality in computers for stock trading, but don’t neglect the less blatant ones. Today, I will discuss a few items that are often overlooked in the schematics of Trading Computers but all play vitally important roles.
Battery Backups: Believe it or not, my highest recommendation comes in the form of a refurbished unit, known as an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS). Most (good ones, anyway) refurbished units come with a brand new premium battery. These premium batteries come with a reasonably long life expectancy ...
... of anywhere from three to five years. The newer models are typically made with inferior parts that save the manufacturer money and are invariably lesser quality. Refurbished units also come with higher batter capacity, meaning you’ll see an even longer run time than you might with newer released models. And anyway, it will save you some money!
Surge protection is another primary component that is vital to all computers, but especially important to computers for stock trading. And it’s important to understand that the machine and monitor are not the only things that need protecting. Cable and/or DSL lines also need protection. My rule says: If a wire is coming from the wall, it needs surge protection!
Another great backup source is known as redundant internet connections. Few things are more frustrating than losing an internet connection, and having a backup can save you loads of aggravation. Having both high-speed cable and DSL as example, can prevent losing precious time in the event of an outage. Keep in mind, you’ll need to have a motherboard capable of supporting the features. An ASUS P6X58D is one I always recommend, but an Ethernet LAN card (also known as an NIC card) will also suffice.
