The most recent statistics come as a surprising contrast to difficulties encountered by Mexico over the past two years. The global recession was the principal factor which caused substantial dips in the number of flights arriving to Mexico from abroad.

Despite this situation, however, in 2010 the total number of passengers arriving to Mexico by air increased 3.2% over 2009. The government has also announced aggressive plans for the expansion of the number of flights to Mexico, so that by the year 2011 it is expected that the total passenger arrivals will another 5%. Cancun is currently the second busiest in Mexico; it is expected to become the busiest within the next decade, and it has considerable capacity to increase even more in flight and passenger numbers. Two major factors in this expansion are the growth of tourism in the Playa del Carmen and Cancun area, and the airport's growing role as an international travel hub.
